What is India Independence Day?
Independence Day in India is a national holiday that marks the end of British rule in 1947 and marks the date of partition of the subcontinent into India and Pakistan. This day marks the establishment of India as a free and independent nation.
How is it celebrated?
This day is marked with flag raising ceremonies throughout India, singing of the national anthem, along with various cultural programs. The Prime Minister delivers a speech at the Red Fort Historic Monument in Old Dehli, and large parades are broadcasted with members of the armed forces participating. Kite flying has become a traditional celebration on this day. Kites of various sizes shapes, and colours fly through the sky.
How WEConnect Celebrates
WEConnect Community and Services has a large South Asian community following. Over the past few years, we have welcomed all to Vaughan City Hall on August 15 to commemorate this occasion. We invite speakers to deliver speeches about India’s History, enjoy lively music, march together as a parade holding up India’s flag, provide a delicious meal for every member, and meet new people within the community. We have compiled pictures and videos over the years to share a piece of our culture with you.
Hundreds of Indians and Friends of India join to sing India’s National Anthem as Honourable Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua unfurls India’s Tiranga at the Vaughan City Hall. The event began with a minute of silence, paying homage to India’s former Prime Minister Sh. Atal Bihari Vajpayee. We then celebrated with many classical patriotic and cultural performances by youth and seniors.
